Hickory Dickory Dock by ~Kanashodu:iconKanashodu:

Hickory Dickory Dock

Such delight jigsaw puzzles bring
Don’t you agree?
You have cut me into billions of little pieces
but few make the attempt to put me together.
You seem to find more amusement in taking me apart

One by one the pieces become jagged until
I no longer fit together.
Let someone else mend me,
It’s easier that way.
For who would be so self sacrificing.

I have lost divine purpose and seem now
to be more of a reaper’s potent.
You are failing your only trial.
Soon the gavel will arc
and the sentence known

I am a part of you as you
are a part of me
but I know you are searching for the key
to the shackles that hold us together
I have become an excuse

You are all tainting me
with each breath you take.
Concentrate on the flesh-filled smoke and ash
as it fills your lungs
and anguished screams echo in you ears

You yield to the tantalizing blade of temptation
Once, Twice, Thrice.
I drain from you
as you lose life’s sustenance and become
hollow beasts. Drip, drop

Believe what you will
about your immunity
Few of you resist the polychromatic pixels
as they blind you with their whisperings
of blissful eternity.

I am what you have become,
what is left of your so-called humanity,
littered with bullet holes
that were fired from guns
formed out of your own virtues.

Time is making a mockery of you all
and I cachinnate along side it, watching
your feverish endeavor to grasp
the few precious seconds
you all have left.

You cannot grip them as they slip
through your blood-stained hands.
Hurry now
Tick tock. Tick, tock.
Tick.
Tock.

Author's Comments

This is a dramatic monologue I wrote for an English assignment way back. It is written in the perspective of humanity talking to us, humans. As you can tell it is quite cynical, but it had to be dramatic. I do value life and appreciate all of the good that does exists, but in today's society, there is just so much wrong in the world.

I'll briefly clarify some of the context in case there was any confusion or something was unclear but you are all free to make your own judgments.

Stanza #1: Humanity has been cut into pieces and each of us holds a fragment. What was once something whole, universal and beautiful has now been scattered.

Stanza #2: Our humanity has become corrupted to the point that we can no longer recognize it. People have become so self-centered that they do not wish to sacrificed their own time in order to mend it.

Stanza #3: What was once a sacred part of our existence has now become a method to corrupt the world. What we do with our existence defines our life, whether their is such a thing as an after- life or not. (It does not have to be taken as a religious reference.)

Stanza #4: Our humanity defines us as the creatures we are. Despite this, there are those who wish to be rid of it so that they do not have such things as a conscious that may prevent them from 'evolving' our society.

Stanza#5: This is actually an allusion to the Holocaust, which is one of the most atrocious acts against humanity. When it says "concentrate" it is alluding the the concentration camps and the crematoriums that burned the bodies, whether they be dead or alive.

Stanza #6: We are easily tempted by evil and each time we cross over we lose a part of our humanity.

Stanza #7: We are constantly being influenced by the media but many people believe they are not affected by it. What they don't realize is that they are being manipulated to the point that their thoughts and opinions may not be their own.

Stanza #8: This is the speaker revealing what it is, or to be more accurate what it has become and its place in the world.

Stanza #9 & 10: With the way we are abusing our planet and ourselves, there may not be much time left for mankind. Only time knows exactly how long we all have and we are beginning to realize that we may not have much of it left.

I would love any kind of feedback, negative or positive, as well as your own opinions ^_^
